Fear, Bias on Revolutionary Day

Iran uses media control to maintain support for its leadership. The most recent example of this is the way that the FARS news agency has handled the 36th anniversary of the storming of the US Embassy and holding American hostages for 444 days beginning in 1979. State media often uses different messaging in Farsi from what they publish in English.

In Farsi, this article proudly proclaims that 70% of Iranians hate America, and that citizens must be vigilant against the onslaught of foreign media.

However, FARS in English, has no mention of the revolutionary anniversary. Instead they focus on news about the war in Syria and religious holidays.

Beyond this, the US media publishes apologies for Iran’s continued use of the phrase “Death to America,” explaining that they were only kidding
